Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has switched the centre of operations of county affairs from City Hall to his home in Mua hills, Machakos County, saying his life is in danger.
On Tuesday, photos emerged showing Sonko chairing a cabinet meeting from his Machakos home, which is under Governor Alfred Mutua’s jurisdiction eliciting mixed reactions from Nairobi residents.
The Governor, who is reported to have been meeting investors from his Machakos home, says he fears being attacked and probably killed if he sets foot in City Hall.
Sonko’s first year in charge of the country’s capital has come under extreme scrutiny and criticism from both leaders and residents, with a section blaming him for apparent mess in the city.
In his defence, however, the flamboyant politician blames cartels and the former administration for the ills bedeviling the city.
He blames his woes on top Jubilee pointmen whom he accuses of plotting to kill him as they are not pleased with the way he has been running operations of Nairobi County.
Sonko has attributed this to the recent decrease in the number of his security detail from 26 bodyguards to only five.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, speaking at a recent function, however stated that Governors were only allowed five bodyguards according to the law.
